  1. Determine the meanings of a word or a phrase in the context of the passage.
  2. Recognize the main idea/overarching theme of a passage.
  3. Understand what can be logically inferred or assumed from the author's views.
  4. Figure out how the information contained in a passage relates to other concepts or ideas.
  5. Identify the relationship between two paired passages.

Tips on mastering SAT's Passages:

  • Read the passage(s) carefully.
  • Pay attention to the first and last sentences of each paragraph.
  • Use the text of the passage as a reference, especially for questions that mention specific lines in the passage.
  • Differentiate between the stated and inferred content.
  • Be mindful of the EXCEPT questions: remember that with those questions you are looking for the "wrong" answer.
  • Answer questions on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage and in any introductory material that may be provided.
  • Make sure you look at all five answer choices before selecting one.
  • Use process of elimination to get to the correct answer.
  • Always remember that you are looking for "the most correct" answer choice available.
