Total questions in this section: 76
Directions:
The Sentence Completion section of the SAT tests your mastery of the meanings of words as well as your ability to understand how different parts of a sentence fit together. Each sentence in the Sentence Completion section has one or two blanks, with each blank indicating that something has been omitted. Beneath a sentence are five words or sets of words labeled A through E. Choose the word or the set of words which, when inserted into the sentence, best fits the meaning of the sentence as a whole.
Tips on mastering SAT's Sentence Completions:
- Read the sentence first, saying "blank" when you encounter one.
- Look for a trigger in each sentence; trigger is usually a transitional word or a phrase that should help you understand the meaning and the direction of the sentence.
- Try to come up with at least one word that would be appropriate to fill the blank with before looking at the answer choices.
- If there is no trigger and the correct answer is not obvious, plug in every one of the five answer choices and determine which makes the most sense.
- As a general rule, in the sentences with two blanks, try to determine which blank is easier to work with and consider it first.
- Make sure you look at all five answer choices before selecting one.
- Use process of elimination to get to the correct answer.
- Always remember that you are looking for "the most correct" answer choice available.
